My autobiography

fall-retreat-halloween-shelton-random-0521Hi! My name is Rachel and I am currently a junior at Appalachian State University majoring in English Secondary Education.  I am excited about entering the classroom, but I am thinking about pursuing a few other passions before I settle into teaching.

I was born and raised in a small town in North Carolina named Lillington. The town is located between Raleigh and Fayetteville and is about five miles from Campbell University if that helps with points of reference.   With the exception of one cousin, my entire family lives within one hour of my hometown.  We are incredibly close, but I may be taking after my cousin by defying the norm and moving away.  My older brother attended ASU several years ago, met his wife, and eventually moved back to Lillington.  This past June they had their first child, a girl named Mackenzie.  She has become the joy of my family because up until her birth I was the baby of the family and with me at 21 years of age we were in desperate need of someone to spoil.

I came to Appalachian with a North Carolina Teaching Fellow scholarship which requires me to teach in North Carolina for at least four years following graduation.  My future plans are pretty much wide open though and I am looking into all sorts of options for post-graduation.

I love to travel and this past summer I had the opportunity to spend ten weeks in Vail, Colorado as a part of a Summer Project with Campus Crusade for Christ.  It was an incredible experience and I am planning to return this summer as a student intern.  I’m not big on planning things very far in advance; I tend to simply take life as it comes.  Everyday should be an adventure and it is my aim to make it so in my life.
